How to get to Fraunhofer IGD:
Fraunhofer IGD is centrally located in Darmstadt, near the Technical University (TU Darmstadt) and just a few minutes’ walk from Luisenplatz, the city’s main square.
By Air
The nearest international airport is Frankfurt Airport (FRA), located approximately 30 km from Darmstadt. From the airport, you have several convenient options:
- By Shuttle Bus (Airliner): The Airliner shuttle bus provides a direct connection between Frankfurt Airport and Darmstadt. Buses depart regularly from Terminal 1 (Bus Stop 14) and Terminal 2.
Please exit at the stop “Kongresszentrum Darmstadtium”, which is just a 2-minute walk from Fraunhofer IGD. The ride takes around 30–40 minutes and the bus runs every 30 minutes. A Ticket costs €10,40 and can be purchased directly from the driver using a credit or debit card.

By Train
Once you arrive at Darmstadt Hauptbahnhof, you can reach Fraunhofer IGD in about 10–15 minutes:
- By Tram or Bus: Take tram lines 2 (direction: Böllenfalltor) or 3 (direction: Lichtenbergschule) , or bus line H (direction: Kranichstein Kesselhutweg) or K (direction: Alfred-Messel-Weg) and get off at stop “Schloss”. From there, it’s only a short walk to the institute. Tickets are available from the ticket machines at the stops and are only valid for immediate travel. A one-way ticket costs €2.90.
- By Taxi: A taxi from the main station takes around 10 minutes and cost around €12.
By Car
If you are arriving by car, you can reach Fraunhofer IGD via the A5 or A67 motorways. Take the exit Darmstadt Stadtmitte and follow signs toward City Center / TU Darmstadt. Public parking is available nearby (e.g., Karolinenplatz or Schlossgarage).
